Community Service: Graduation Requirements
At North Carolina Cyber Academy, all high school students are required to complete 25 hours of community service with a nonprofit organization each year as part of their graduation requirements.
This requirement supports the cultivation of civic literacy which is actively participating and initiating change in one’s community. Research has shown that engaging in community service can enhance a myriad of skills such as problem-solving, collaboration with others, time management, communication and leadership. Our students have shared that through their community service hours they have:
1. developed a richer perspective of the world they live in
2. connected what they learned in school to the real world and
3. helped decide on a future career.
Ask yourself: How do you want your service hours to impact you? Find an experience that strengthens your weaknesses or further peaks your curiosity or challenges your thinking. Sky’s the limit!
*Before you begin serving, ask your parent/guardian for their approval of each experience you engage in.
